Children are the future and it is the responsibility of adults to protect them and ensure that they get the best footing in life. Unfortunately this is not always the case in many nations around the world – including our own! This list looks at ten of the worst situations that children today are forced to face. It is hard to believe that these situations still occur, but learning about them is a good way to start trying to help.

The figures coming out of the euro zone still make dismal reading, however. Several economies are expected to contract this year, notably Spain and Italy which are forecast to shrink by 1.6% and 1.1% respectively. GDP in the euro area as a whole is expected to decline by 0.2% in 2013, a second consecutive year of contraction, before returning to tepid growth of 0.8% next year. These figures look at odds with the buoyancy in many European stockmarkets this year, which are racing ahead due in part to the strong performance of American markets. Chris Cobb, an artist based in San Francisco, has created an amazing installation in bookshop called Adobe Books- he catalogued every single one of the 20,000 books by color. The project is titled There is Nothing Wrong in This Whole Wide World. They were arranged by hand over a 10 hour period, and he enlisted the help of 16 volunteers. Such beautiful results, they transformed the bookshop overnight.

The Cultural Map of the World This intriguing, although somewhat subjective graphic is the “The Inglehart-Welzel Cultural Map of the World”, which is designed and based on research by the World Values Survey. The WVS is a global research project, carried out by a network of research scientists, whose  mission it is to: “Explore people’s values and beliefs, their changes over time and their social and political effects.” Based in Sweden, with archives in Spain, and a predominantly European team, the organization generates findings valuable to policy makers in building civil society and democratic institutions. Their work is also used by governments and international organizations and institutions, such as the World Bank and the United Nations. Do you agree with this map?
